THE TOPPLING TOMB OF THE IMPALING EMPEROR

A Summary of the 10/5/97 Session

By Brian P. Clausen 10/9/97

Having cleared out the unnatural denizens of the mines, the party decides to leave the heavily warded room for another day. They spend time training, forging, mining, and creating elemental charms. Bart promptly leaves, returning several weeks later, his withered hand restored, circle increased, and elementalist spellcasting forsaken.

The party decides to reconnoiter the tower at the tip of the southern peninsula. They secure their own tower and travel to the coast without event. The tower looks like something large impacted it midway up from the landward side. After digging out the collapsed entrance, the party makes a cursory exploration. Finding nothing, and believing the tower to be unstable, the party exits and climbs down the cliffs to explore the cave entrances, in which direction Aliou detects something of value.

The cave tunnels prove difficult to traverse. A human bone is discovered and Bart courageously casts his spell that allows him to experience the death of its former owner. He perceives kneeling before a charismatic man in dress suggestive of the Romans. He then perceives that the kneeling man is killed by a Roman spear thrust to the head, yet somehow it seems to be an honorable death. After Bart awakens with a doosey of a headache, the party returns to the tower. Exploring a brass staircase they find it ends in a body of water. Pictures on the wall suggest that this is the tomb of the Emperor that succeeded Sigmar, the founder of the empire. Aliou uses his magic to confer gills upon the party and they venture into the cold, stagnant water. They break through brass doors and find a hall at the end of which is the mummified form of the Emperor sitting atop a throne. Mounted on his belt buckle is a valuable and very rare orichalcum coin. When the mummy is taken off the throne, however, a stone block cuts off their exit and obsidian elemental statues move in to attack. The statues have an advantage in the underwater environment and, still possessing intelligence from their former lives as soldiers, fight with such tactical proficiency that the party is forced to leave the mummy on its throne and attempt escape. Aliou's water elemental lifts the stone wall and drops it again after the party has safely exited the room. Meanwhile, the elemental statues form a stone barricade across the width of the room behind which they can prepare to meet the next assault.
