A Summary of the 11/16/97 Session

By Brian P. Clausen 11/17/97

The party spends the night healing up and goes back down for another try. To their chagrin, when they open the door they find that the black ichor that leaked from the four elemental guards they managed to slay previously has drastically reduced visibility. Bart levels the playing field by casting two astral flares to blind the guards, hoping that this action doesn't catch the attention of distant horrors. Aliou sends the water elemental in to try to retrieve the casket and finds that a wall has somehow been erected in the room. The water elemental finds a way through it - a suspiciously convenient opening in the wall. Fearing a trap, Aliou refuses to send the water elemental through the opening, so Pole and Oxander bravely offer to follow the water elemental to another possible gap in the wall. The plan goes awry when this second gap turns out to be near the ceiling and too small for Pole to fit through. Two guards grab Pole's feet and an a cold, dark, clautrophobic fight is on. Oxander, Demek, Neth, and Bart clean up the guards outside the wall. Aliou widens the hole between the wall and ceiling and the water elemental takes Pole down to the other side with the intention of retrieving the casket. Unfortunately Pole, facing the wrong way in the darkness, grabs a gaurd instead. The water elemental grabs the casket and jumps to the wall, and Pole manages to escape as well. Aliou starts freezing the water to discourage pursuit and the party flees the room with their prize.

Picture of the Spirit Back at their island camp Aliou freezes the surrounding water while Neth picks the locks on the gold-plated casket. The party retrieves the Belt of Agomous (featuring an orichalcum coin), a breast plate, and miscellanious nonmagical jewelery. Unfortunately the angry spirit of the long dead king materializes. Bart locks him in spirit combat, but not before it translocates its' guards from the lower tomb. Oxander wades into the combat and Neth, enjoying an astral invisibility, harangues the enemy mercilessly. Demek chases the spirit as it flies about the room while Bart attempts to grapple with it on the unseen plane again. Bart's central position on the staircase, however, makes him a prime target for the spears of the guards. Aliou and his familiar Leelay retreat up into the shaky tower, pursued by a guard. The spirit targets the room with a supernatural fireball, forever killing Bart. Enraged, Leelay kills the pursuing guard and Aliou tumbles down the staircase to launch a desperate ricochet attack at the spirit. The attack hits the spirit twice, and on its death the remaining guards evaporate.
