MILES TO GO
A Summary of the 1/17/98 Session
By Brian P. Clausen 1/25/98
Fearing what may come to investigate the astral flares Bart used in the recent combat, the party sets off on a northwesterly route immediately.
They decide to visit the legendary spitting Tolarian pirates who make their home not too far to the west of their present location.
They get to a point midway between the Northern Village (where Bart previously did some graverobbing to obtain some undead servants) and the Southern Village
when they decide that perhaps they should head to the Southern Village to try to conscript a ferry to take them to Tolaria by sea.
The party is engaged in a half-hearted debate about where and how to inter the late Barthalemou "Bart" E'Gambet the Nethermancer's remains when they come upon a wondrous thing -
a wingding (aka windling) from over the ocean!
The newcomer is Miles Vorkosigan, a wingding from Barnar, a little country of wingdings on the edge of Thera.
He relays the following rumors from the Barsaive homeland: a T'skrang consortium based in Urupa and represented by Telinor Telan was preparing to send another expedition to Kellawan,
there is increased straining of relations between Shosharra and the Bloodwood,
the T'skrang river raiders are more active,
and for some reason Thera has pulled back its outward expansion.
Of more immediate concern, Miles reports that he heard rumors that a group consisting of an elf,
two humans, and "two big things" which later turn out to be Obsidiman potlings were asking around after him in the Southern Village.
The party surmises that the elf is a scout leading the other horrific impostors on the trail of Miles. They decide to head north up the peninsula in search of a more strategic place to meet their foes.
In the hopes of stalling their foes and giving themselves more time to heal from their last fight, Aliou sends an earth elemental to grab at the feet of the elven scout.
The elemental returns with two boots from two different creatues, explaining that he wasn't sure which was the elf and so roughed up two of the enemy before making its escape.
The party makes camp in a 60-80 acre grove of woods that provide some cover, despite being leafless in the snowy winter.
They recuperate and make plans for ambushing the enemy. When Neth spots tracks leading up to their camp and away they decide to relocate within the forest.
When the enemy attack comes it is very cleverly spearheaded by moving spheres of darkness that later turn out to be mere skeletons (more graverobbing in the Southern Village no doubt) intended to take the brunt of the party's magical firepower.
A desperate battle ensues and Miles quickly establishes his valor and skill in battle.
Demek, Oxander, and Pole fight well despite the dogpile tactics of the remaining skeletons and the fiery hot blades of the Obsidimen potlings.
During the combat one of two evil nethermancers makes an astral flare, once again signalling the party's location to the dark forces that seek them.
When the tables finally turn on the enemy the elven scout sprints for safety.
Neth later tracks him down and tells Aliou where to lob a fireball to complete their victory.
