That deal concluded the party reassembles to conduct a much more loathsome negotiation with the Horror (which may or may not be Verjigorm, the Horror of Horrors) that has marked Pole. The Horror indicates through Pole that their is a rogue wormskull in the northwest and that if the party fights it and Pole is allowed to deliver the final blow with a strange dagger he somehow acquired, then the Horror will relenquish his marks on Pole. The party does not want to do a Horror's bidding, but killing Horrors is what they do anyway so they are willing to go after the wormskull. However the party insists that the Horror relenquish his strengthening of the thread that it has on Pole (they don't know it but Pole caused that strengthening by attaching a thread to the dagger). They also indicate that what with combat being what it is they can't promise that Pole will deliver the killing blow. Having reached an understanding of sorts Aliou promises grave retribution if the Horror does not release its thread on Pole after they go kill the rogue lieutenant.
The party confirms with Aurum that the strengthening of the thread has been undone (much to Pole's dismay, who shockingly hoped to realize a combat advantage from that terrible connection). They then set out for the location indicated by the Horror. They find a forest, and inside that forest a region of dead trees. In a glade they see what appears to be the wormskull sitting atop a throne of wood. Aliou is suspicious but his eyes don't see anything amiss. They attack and the wormskull proves to be an illusion, and the real one steps out of the forest. Worse yet there is a pit around the wooden throne that several party members fall into.
The party is not undone so easily. A terrific combat ensues which brings the party to the brink of extinction. Ultimately the wormskull runs like the craven it is. Pole tries to kill the Horror but misses and it quickly moves out of his reach. Neth runs it down and finishes the job.
When the party returns to Middenheim they find, not surprisingly, that the thread is still attached to Pole, meaning
that the Horror will always know where Pole is and might be able to use Pole's senses to see and hear what the party
does. Aliou grimly plans a terrible strike. The real war has begun.
